Grace
United Methodist Church
SAINT AUGUSTINE, FLORIDA
2000
Professional Restoration,
in conjunction with E.C. Kenyon, was awarded the contract for the exterior
restoration of this magnificent building.
The Grace United Methodist Church of St. Augustine is a fine example of the
early use of Coquina and Terra Cotta. In a construction sense, Coquina describes
fragments of marine shells and coral which when mixed with a bonding agent
make up a whitish rock building material. The actual word "Coquina"
or pompano, means a small clam.
Most of the restoration was concentrated on the Terra Cotta bell tower. The intricate structures and figues had cracked and chipped from the elements. The reconstruction was handled by our artisians with only the remaining figures to use as a guide.
The circled areas were completely reconstructed by Professional Restoration artisians. Even under close scutiny it is difficult to distinguish from the original.
