Stetson University
Elizabeth Hall

DeLand, Florida

2000

Elizabeth Hall was the first major building erected on the Stetson University Campus and was named for Mr. Stetson's third wife, Elizabeth Shindler Stetson. The center section was completed in 1892 with the North and South wings being added in 1897.

The exterior restoration included extensive brickwork, complete recovery of the metal and wooden cupola, timber replacement, and terra cotta rebuilding.

The major problem visible to the passerby, was the chipped, broken and separated brick that encompassed the entire façade.

Something much less noticeable to the man in the street is the number of bricks that were discolored, stained and efflorescent as a result of crystallization, evaporation and chemical change. Elizabeth Hall has over 200,000 external face bricks of which around 10% received individual restoration procedures. There was also some 12,000 linear feet of brick mortar joints tuck-pointed along with 6000 linear feet of terra cotta jointing.
